This week, students across CBC came together to mark World Religion Day, an annual event held on the third Sunday of January. The day’s purpose is simple yet powerful: to promote understanding, respect, and unity among people of all faiths and worldviews.
Our learning focused on how different religions share common values, and how recognising these similarities can help us build a kinder, more peaceful community.
Exploring the Origins of World Religions Day
In lessons, students discovered that World Religions Day began within the Bahá’í faith, a religion that emphasises the unity of all people and all religions. The Bahá’í community introduced the day to encourage people to look beyond differences and instead focus on the shared principles that connect us.
We explored:
- Why the Bahá’í faith began this celebration
- How its message of equality and unity can help reduce conflict
- The idea that all religions carry wisdom that can help humanity live together peacefully
Students also watched a short video introducing the Bahá’í faith, helping them understand how the movement works to bring people together.
Discovering the Golden Rule Across Faiths
A highlight of the week was comparing teachings from six major world religions: Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Sikhism. Students were surprised to see just how similar these teachings are.
Each one offered a version of the Golden Rule—the belief that we should treat others as we wish to be treated.
By examining these teachings side-by-side, students saw that kindness, compassion, and fairness lie at the heart of many belief systems.
Reflecting on Our Own Role in a Diverse World
We also thought about how we, as individuals, can honour the spirit of World Religion Day. Students discussed meaningful actions such as:
- Asking respectful questions about other people’s beliefs
- Learning something new about a religion they know little about
- Showing empathy, curiosity, and kindness in daily life
The week ended with a powerful reminder from Bahá’u’lláh, founder of the Bahá’í faith:
“Let your vision be world embracing.”
Students reflected on what a “world embracing” attitude means for them—both inside school and in the wider world.
A Meaningful Celebration of Unity
Our World Religion Day activities encouraged students to appreciate the diversity around them and recognise the common values that unite us all. Through discussion, reflection, and learning, CBC students demonstrated openness, respect, and a willingness to understand others —qualities that will help them become compassionate global citizens.
