Year 11 students took part in an exciting and inspiring visit to the University of East London (UEL), gaining first-hand experience of university life and the pathways available to them after their GCSEs. The trip offered students the chance to explore a modern campus, meet current university students, and discover a wide range of academic and career opportunities.
The day began with a warm welcome from UEL’s outreach team, who introduced students to the university’s vision and the diverse subjects on offer—from health sciences and engineering to business, media, and performing arts. Many students were surprised by just how wide-ranging the options were and how accessible higher education can be for young people from all backgrounds.
A highlight of the visit was the interactive workshop, where pupils worked in groups to explore future career aspirations and the skills needed to succeed in higher education. Students also had the opportunity to ask questions about university life, from managing workloads and joining societies to applying for student finance.
After the workshop, students embarked on a guided campus tour. They explored lecture theatres, study spaces, and the university’s impressive sports facilities, gaining a sense of what daily life at UEL is really like. For many, this was their first time setting foot on a university campus, making the experience both memorable and motivating.
Throughout the day, staff emphasised the importance of thinking ahead, setting goals, and keeping options open as students prepare to begin their post‑16 journeys. The trip aimed to help students envision their future and build confidence as they move closer to making decisions about further education.
The visit left a strong impression on the Year 11 cohort, inspiring them to reflect on their own aspirations and potential career paths.
One student shared: “Seeing the campus and talking to real university students made everything feel more real. It helped me picture myself at university one day – I didn’t think that before.”
