On 17 February 2026, people all around the world celebrated Chinese Lunar New Year, one of the biggest and brightest festivals of the year. This year is extra special because it marks the Year of the Fire Horse, a zodiac sign that only appears once every 60 years!

Lunar New Year begins on the night of the first new moon of the year. Families gather to share food, decorate their homes in red, and welcome good luck for the months ahead. Red decorations and firecrackers are used because, according to tradition, they help scare away bad spirits and bring protection and happiness.

Lunar New Year at CBC
Here at CBC, pupils have been learning about the traditions, stories, and symbols of Chinese New Year during tutor time and cultural studies sessions. Some classes even created their own paper lanterns, lucky red envelopes, and Fire Horse art inspired by what they learned.
When we asked pupils what they thought of this year’s theme, many were amazed by the powerful Fire Horse symbol.
A pupil said: “I didn’t realise the Fire Horse was so rare! It makes this year feel more exciting, like we should all be brave and try something new. It’s cool to think people around the world are celebrating the same thing in so many different ways.”
