A group of Year 10 pupils visited Waltham Forest College for an inspiring introduction to the world of further education and the opportunities that await them after their GCSEs. The visit offered students a valuable chance to discover new subjects, understand different vocational pathways, and gain a deeper sense of what life at college is really like.
Upon arrival, students were welcomed by members of the college’s outreach and admissions teams, who gave an overview of the college’s ethos, facilities, and broad range of courses. From digital media, construction, and engineering to health and social care, beauty therapy, and business, pupils were surprised by the variety of specialist subjects available.
During a guided tour of the campus, students explored practical learning environments including workshops, studios, science labs, and industry‑standard training spaces. Many commented on how different the college felt compared to school, noting the independence and responsibility students are encouraged to develop.
A highlight of the day was a hands‑on taster session, where pupils tried activities linked to different vocational areas. These interactive sessions helped students understand the skills required in various industries and the types of learning they might experience if they chose a college route at 16.
Staff also spoke about entry requirements, apprenticeships, progression routes, and support available to learners—from academic mentoring to careers guidance and enrichment opportunities. The visit encouraged Year 10 pupils to begin thinking about their futures and the choices they will soon be making.
The trip sparked plenty of discussion on the journey back to school, with pupils reflecting on the new possibilities that college could offer them.
One student commented: “I didn’t realise how many options there were at college. Seeing the facilities and trying out the activities made me excited about what I could do after Year 11.”
